One of the main objectives of the project is to integrate fully the social issues in the development of mining activities, since, although mining is primarily thought of as an engineering-related productive activity, its extractive condition, its dimension, and its clearly decentralized nature impact the social setting.

The systematization and dissemination of the best practices developed in Peru for stakeholder engagement and the management of social conflicts constitute a fundamental tool to promote the development of the mining industry in the environment in which it is operating. Otherwise, possibilities for the development of future mining activities will be seriously restricted.

The existence of conflicts, latent or potential, is intrinsic to social relationships, making imperative the creation of a favourable climate for the development of mining operations and the training of stakeholders in conflict management. Thus, for the PERCAN project, conflict management is an important element in the strengthening of the industry as a whole.
