Environmental Issues

Document Actions

In its first phase, the PERCAN project contributed to the formulation of guidelines and the training of mining regulators. In the second phase, the PERCAN project strives to make available for the sector new and more efficient tools and procedures for the management of environmental responsibilities inherent to mining operations, which is a necessary condition for a responsible development of mining activities. These include, among others, Environmental and Social Management Programs; Standards Review; Development of Monitoring Techniques; Closing Plans and their Related Costs; Evaluation of Environmental Liabilities; Review and Update of Various Monitoring Protocols and Guidelines; Public Consultation Process; Development of Methodologies for Environmental and Social Audits; Accreditation System for External Auditors.

At the same time it will be necessary to provide stakeholders training on environmental issues, and at the regional level, promote the decentralization of the supervisory responsibilities. Special attention will be given to the issue of orphan and abandoned mine sites, a critical issue for the mining industry, which we believe strongly affects its image.
