Brief Description
The PERCAN project is a highly innovative Peruvian-Canadian cooperation program, aimed at improving the contribution of the mining sector to the sustainable development of the Peruvian mining regions, promoting the dynamic and firm integration of social issues within an integrated framework for socially responsible and efficient mining.
The PERCAN project will take shape through the implementation of activities aimed at strengthening the institutional capacity of the mining sector, favouring policies and practices that are appropriate for the Peruvian mining industry. These activities will have a positive impact on the services provided by MEM and its regional offices, by generating trust and, in turn, improving the performance and competence of the regional offices. The strengthening of the capacity of MEM and its regional offices implies the development and application of operative and administrative best practices available globally.
The strategy for achieving fundamental PERCAN project goals necessarily implies the establishment, from the beginning, of a constructive process of permanent consultation with the stakeholders in the Peruvian mining sector, in order to develop joint work procedures and consensus. PERCAN, thus, intends for stakeholders to take ownership of the project and to interact closely with the PERCAN team, whose role has been conceived as one of motivators, coordinators, and specially, communicators and facilitators. This is not an easy task, but it is indispensable to ensure project credibility, acceptance, and success. The project philosophy of participative action is a guarantee to build sustainable institutional capacity.
Moreover, the PERCAN project strives to work with regional academic institutions, which will be able, in turn, to train future mining sector officials and leaders and in this way address the needs and requirements of the stakeholders involved in the Peruvian mining activity.
In terms of results, the PERCAN project is committed to improving the supply of services provided to stakeholders, thus contributing to the integral performance of the mining activity and, consequently, to better the quality of life of Peruvians in the mining regions.
